In 1963, Frame returned to New Zealand and, partly because of the whispers and conjecture that continued to surround her life, decided to write the truth. Fifteen years later I was to become familiar with Porirua hospital, ward K2, as my mother tried repeatedly to find some relief from the terror and bleakness of her late-life depression. To be in any way abnormal in New Zealand's closed society was a stigma to be "mental" was an unrecoverable shame. I looked on her life with admiration, pity and fear. "Sunnyside? They call a mental hospital Sunnyside? Is she still there?" "Was Janet Frame in Porirua?" I would ask, peering at the flat prison-like buildings surrounded by misshapen macrocarpas. Most weekends our family drove to our beach house in Plimmerton, passing the notorious Porirua asylum. Others said she had gone overseas and was living anonymously. Some believed she was still in an asylum, perhaps having had a lobotomy. It started many rumours and dark imaginings about her actual life. Owls Do Cry is based partly on events in Frame's life, including her experience of spending eight years in and out of mental asylums.

The lady of the lake sapkowski novel5/30/2023 At the same time cynical and noble, Geralt has been compared to Raymond Chandler's signature character Philip Marlowe. Geralt exists in an ambiguous moral universe, yet manages to maintain his own coherent code of ethics. The main character of The Witcher (alternative translation: The Hexer) is Geralt, a mutant assassin who has been trained since childhood to hunt down and destroy monsters. This cycle and his many other works have made him one of the best-known fantasy authors in Poland in the 1990s. Sapkowski has created a cycle of tales based on the world of The Witcher, comprising three collections of short stories and five novels. His first short story, The Witcher ( Wiedźmin), was published in Fantastyka, Poland's leading fantasy literary magazine, in 1986 and was enormously successful both with readers and critics. Sapkowski studied economics, and before turning to writing, he had worked as a senior sales representative for a foreign trade company. Andrzej Sapkowski, born Jin Łódź, is a Polish fantasy writer.

My impressions: I loved this book – it was not only insightful and thought provoking, but also fun to read and filled with satire and wit. This book covers one day of that trip – when they are hosted by the Dallas Cowboys, to be shown on the jumbotron, meet the celebrities, players, cheerleaders, and participate in the half-time show. The Army then decides to capitalize on this engaging image of their soldiers perfuming at their best and brings the squad back to the US on a “victory” tour for two weeks, to help promote the Army, help with recruiting and win support for the war – similarly to what the US military has done in previous conflicts. Summary in 3 sentences: A squad of army infantry soldiers is engaged in a firefight in Iraq in which with heroism they overcome a superior force – which is caught on film by an embedded FOX news crew, and the film goes viral in America. SF Chronicle called it Pulitzer Prize-quality good. I hadn’t heard of it, but after getting started, I found out that it is winner of the National Book critics circle award for fiction, winner, LA time Book award for fiction, finalist in the National Book Award and a number of other awards. Why this book: Suggested by my good friend Carl Czech to be read by a reading group I’m in at work.

The striding place gertrude atherton5/30/2023 It is a public navigation from the weir at Tadcaster to its junction with the Ouse near Cawood and is tidal from Ulleskelf to the Ouse. The Wharfe is 65 miles (104.6 km) long (before it joins the Ouse), making it the 21st longest river in Britain. The section of the river from its source to around Addingham is in Upper Wharfedale and has a very different character to the river downstream. It then flows into the River Ouse near Cawood. Flowing initially through Langstrothdale, it then passes by, or in some cases through, Kettlewell, Grassington, Bolton Abbey, Addingham, Ilkley, Burley-in-Wharfedale, Otley, Wetherby and Tadcaster. The watercourse first becomes known as the River Wharfe at the confluence of Greenfield Beck and Oughtershaw Beck at Beckermonds. For much of its middle course it is the county boundary between West Yorkshire and North Yorkshire. The River Wharfe ( / hw ɔːr f/ WHORF) is a river in Yorkshire, England originating within the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

Therese of lisieux story of a soul5/30/2023 In 1901 it was translated into English, and in 1912 another translation, the first complete edition of the life of the Servant of God, containing the autobiography, "Letters and Spiritual Counsels", was published. The account of the eleven years of her religious life, marked by signal graces and constant growth in holiness, is given by Soeur Thérèse in her autobiography, written in obedience to her superior and published two years after her death. He preferred to leave the decision in the hands of the superior, who finally consented and on 9 April 1888, at the unusual age of fifteen, Thérèse Martin entered the convent of Lisieux where two of her sisters had preceded her. When she was fifteen she applied for permission to enter the Carmelite Convent, and being refused by the superior, went to Rome with her father, as eager to give her to God as she was to give herself, to seek the consent of Pope Leo XIII, then celebrating his jubilee. She was born at Alençon, France, 2 January 1873 died at Lisieux 30 September 1897. She is also known as St.Thérèse of Child Jesus. George Washington by Augusta Stevenson5/30/2023 The barrels were packed with his tobacco, raised on his Virginia plantations. Any hogshead that “went wild” was a bad loss for him. Now they were holding these ropes-ready to roll when their master gave the signal. Faster and faster! Wilder and wilder! And then with a great splash it would plunge into the deep river.įield hands up on the bank had placed strong ropes around a hogshead. Sometimes a barrel would “go wild.” It would get loose from its ropes and go crashing down like a great monster. It was a sight to see-those tobacco hogsheads rolling down the steep bank. Others came from plantations round about. They knew the danger, for they came to Augustine Washington’s plantation every year on “Loading Day.” Many came from the little town of Fredericksburg, across the Rappahannock River. “Move back!” the sheriff shouted to the people again. He pointed toward the hogsheads, or barrels, of tobacco ready to come rolling down the hill. The sheriff walked toward the crowd to push some of the people back. The crowd on the shore moved back, but not enough to suit the sheriff. “MOVE BACK! Move back!” shouted the sheriff.

Lelio and Jessica Goldberg co-wrote the screenplay for Voyagers based on interviews with Druyan and others who worked on the Golden Record project.
